Friday we spent the day at the Dallas Convention Center. We were volunteering doing pirate photos for the Snowball Express, which is a charity that provides hope and new memories to the children of our fallen military heroes who died while on active duty since 9-11. One of our grooms from this year is a VP for Elbit Systems, a government military contractor, and they are a big sponsor of the Snowball Express and they told us about it. We were eager to help any way we could and when we found out they were thinking of doing pirate-themed family photos we were excited to donate our services.

There were many people involved in putting together this donation to Snowball Express and we would like to say a huge thank you to them – we couldn’t have done this event without you!  Many thanks to Janet and Frank with Cottonwood Creek Costume Company for not only providing props and costumes but also for volunteering their time on Friday to help dress people in costume all day.  We would also like to thank Joyce with GG Creations and Tim with Old Time Photos in Pigeon Forge for sending us tons costumes and props. Finally, another huge thank you goes out to Andrew with Shinko for providing the media for the printers and thanks to Doug, Laura and Tina with imageTech Marketing for providing the Shinko S1245 8×10 printer and Eric, Ronny and Bob with Imaging Spectrum for providing the back up Shinko S1245 printer.

Saturday we were invited to a special day at Cowboy Stadium. The floor of the stadium was set up for dinner and a special concert by the Lt. Dan Band. If the name sounds familiar it is because it is named for Gary Sinise’s character in Forrest Gump. Mr. Sinise came out on the field hours before the concert to shake hands, do photos and sign autographs for the attendees. I was able to photograph him and shake his hand. I thanked him for all he had done for Snowball Express and everyone in the military.

This was incredibly moving experience to know what these families have gone through and we were honored and humbled to be a small part of this amazing event.

Snowball Express Event at the Cowboy

Tanya and I are big believers in charitable giving and we frequently look for new ways to give back to our community. One of our grooms this year, Bob, was telling us about a project he and his staff at Elbit Systems were working on called Snowball Express and it got us excited. Snowball Express was founded in 2006 to “Provide hope and new memories for the children of our fallen military heroes who died while on active duty since September 11, 2001”.

For the past few years their annual event has been held in Anaheim, CA but this year it will be in Dallas.  Elbit Systems is one of the sponsors for the event and Bob mentioned their idea of doing photography this year, so Tanya asked if we could help with some consulting.  We met with their organizers several weeks ago and found out they plan to have roving photographers but they also wanted to do a pirate-themed photo-op.  Well, everyone knows that costumed photography is one of mine and Tanya’s specialities so we said “sign us up”! A huge thanks goes out to Shinko, who has donated the 8×10 dye-sub media we will be printing on at the event. We would also like to thank all of our fellow studio owners across the country who have offered to send us their stash of pirate costumes to use at the event – we will post a list of everyone who contributed in a few weeks.

This year’s Snowball Express event will be taking place at the Dallas Convention Center on December 11 – it is not open to the public but people can still show their support by checking out the Snowball Express website.  Here’s a peak at the t-shirts we will be wearing:
